Our Promise
At Get Hooked we connect you to 40 small-boat fishing families to sample the full variety of California's sustainable ocean bounty. We are committed to sourcing locally and sustainably and we are a scientific authority on seafood, so you can trust in your access to the most transparent, ethical, and fresh seafood.
KIM & VIC
Kim is a marine ecologist affiliated with UCSB, and the Executive Director of Commercial Fisherman of Santa Barbara (CFSB), a non-profit port association. She is passionate about bringing fishers, scientists and policymakers together to tackle complex issues facing our fishing community.
Victoria comes from a local family of commercial fishers and has fished commercially for both Sockeye Salmon in Alaska and Spiny Lobsters in California. With a passion for sustainable take and ethical stewardship, she feels deeply connected to the identity and way of life that comes with an ocean-based living.
Kim and Victoria’s partnership in creating Get Hooked marries both the academic and commercial fishing backgrounds, uniting in shared passion to provide education about and access to this local resource.
WHERE WE GET OUR FISH
Did you know that California is a world leader in sustainably fisheries management? We only source from thriving California fisheries, of which there are many, thanks to the successful management and conservation measures enacted in California over the past 2 decades.
We work with several dozen small boats statewide, many based at the Santa Barbara Channel Islands, where clean, nutrient rich waters support rich kelp forest and shelf ecosystems, providing more than a hundred fishery species. Our small boats fish adaptively, targeting what is abundant and in season; fishing regulations also ensure that overfishing does not occur. One of our goals is to bring you variety and expand your palate, to align with this adaptive, diversified strategy for sustainable harvest.
Supporting Local
Get Hooked was launched in 2018 as a Community Supported Fishery (CSF) program: an alternative supply chain that operates in a way that uplifts local fishing families and enables the public to directly support and learn about the local food system.
With deep ties to the fishing community, Get Hooked is dedicated to supporting local fishers and their families. We aim to boost visibility and foster economic resilience for our local working waterfronts while promoting sustainable fishing practices and ethical stewardship.
Giving Back
As of 2024 we have donated 10,000 servings of local seafood to those experiencing food insecurity. We are proud to have partnered with other community organizations including the Santa Barbara Foodbank, Santa Maria Salvation Army, the Eastside Community Center, and a preschool for migrant farmerworker families in Oxnard. We also make it easy for our members to donate with just a click!
We have also been working with Rio School District in Oxnard to provide children with healthy and sustainable seafood options. In the next two school years we will be developing curriculum and expanding our program from 3300 meals per month to ~40,000.
Our Regenerative Fish Scrap Fertilizer
We are excited to be turning our fish scraps into a micronutrient-rich liquid garden amendment that recharges soil health and supports thriving plants.
It turns out that the sea is rich in essential micro-nutrients that are important ingredients in soil and plant health, as well as human health. Sea nutrients fuel the microbiome of healthy living soil by encouraging the growth and diversity of the soil food web. A biodiverse and healthy soil food web is a critical foundation for plant health and growth. Plants rely on the soil microbiome to access nutrients and fight infection, similar to how our own micro-biome is integral to our health and nutrition.
