Membership Basics
HOW DO I SIGN UP?
- Go to "Join Now" on the main menu and select the portion size that matches your household needs. You'll then choose a pick up site or home delivery, and list your seafood preferences. Then enter your payment details and look for a Welcome email that has all the information you need to know.
HOW DOES MEMBERSHIP WORK?
- Membership cost is tied to the portion size of fish fillet you wish to receive. Choose from 12, 18, 24 or 30 ounces of seafood per delivery.
- You pay a flat rate for 4 ‘Main Share’ deliveries upfront and are billed again automatically after your 4th delivery. You can pause or cancel your membership at anytime.
- Being a member gives you access to our online shop so you can purchase additional seafood (and other items) to bundle with your next scheduled Main Share delivery.
SHOULD I ORDER SMALL, MEDIUM, LARGE, OR XL SHARE?
- We recommend a Small Share for 1-2 adults, Medium Share for 2-3 adults or a family with 1-2 kids, a Large Share for 3-4 adults and XL Share for a larger family or neighbors sharing a subscription.
- The weights of fish fillets in our share sizes are: Small: 12 oz., Medium: 18 oz., Large: 24 oz., XL: 30 oz. Exact weights may vary by 1-2 oz.
- The weights for other seafood types (shrimp, crab, mussels, oysters, etc.) will be greater in order to account for shell weights when providing for these portions.
WHY DO I PAY A FLAT RATE FOR SEAFOOD?
- Even though the cost of seafood varies widely, you pay the same flat rate for every Main Share seafood delivery so that we can be unconstrained in bringing you a wide variety of ‘catch of the day’ local seafood over time, and you try out new things.
- We try to balance expensive and inexpensive seafood types over time to average out to a fair price.
- There are special expensive delicacies like Lobster or Abalone that we will offer you for an additional upgrade fee to your flat rate. You’ll see these in your Friday newsletter and you can use the ‘Choose Your Main Share’ button in our online shop to partake of these, or to select other choices without an upgrade fee.
HOW OFTEN CAN I RECEIVE A DELIVERY?
- The default delivery schedule of your seafood share is once per week (Wednesday or Thursday based on your location), but you can request a biweekly delivery schedule (every other week), or set a tailored delivery schedule to skip more weeks in your online account portal.
HOW DOES BILLING WORK?
- All customers are automatically billed for 4 ‘Main Share’ deliveries upon signup. Your subscription is auto-renewed, after every 4 deliveries, until you wish to cancel. Get a full refund for your unspent balance at any time.
- You can also shop in the member store and add items to your delivery until the Monday 10am deadline. These extra items are paid for immediately on checkout.
HOW DOES DELIVERY WORK?
- You can choose Home Delivery, or Pick Up from one of our many neighborhood partner sites. Home delivery is an additional $5-12, depending on your location.See all the options and pricing here.
- We send a text reminder on the delivery day to remind you about your upcoming delivery. If you aren’t getting our texts, please email us to resolve this.
- For Home Delivery, we drop your seafood in a waterproof insulated re-usable tote bage filled with ice at your door . We try to drop it in a shady spot so it will stay properly chilled 12-24 hours. Please provide any special instructions for how to access your property or where to leave the seafood. Please put your last week's cooler bag out at the door on the morning of your delivery so we can retrieve it when we drop your next delivery. You will get a text message reminder to do this the evening before your delivery.
- For Pick-Up at our partner host sites, the evening before your pick-up, you will receive a text reminder to pick up your seafood. Your Welcome email will have details about your pick up site. You’ll find a Igloo cooler with a big Get Hooked label on it and a dozen bags of seafood packed in ice inside. Look for the label with your name on it and take it home. If you ordered add-ons they will be stapled together or adjacent in the cooler. Check your name off the list from our clipboard. Most pick up sites give you a 2-day window to come get your seafood. We provide you with one free insulated tote bag to take your seafood home in. You will find the bag labeled with your name on it at the pick up site on your first delivery day.
HOW DO I SKIP OR PAUSE DELIVERIES FOR A SPELL?
- Log on to your account before Monday 10 am each week to apply changes to your membership, including skipping your next delivery without charge, or changing your subscription size, opt-out preferences or delivery address.
- Our skip feature allows you to set a schedule for skipping specific weeks up to three months in advance.
- When you skip you can choose to either bank your credit for that delivery or donate your seafood to a family in need. We partner with Food banks and other community organizations to make seafood donations.
- You can also indefinitely pause or cancel deliveries in your account portal or by emailing us, and can re-start deliveries through the same methods at any time.
All About The Seafood
WHAT SEAFOOD WILL I GET?
- Like a CSA, our mission is to help you eat what is freshly harvested, sustainable and best supports our fishing community.
- You’ll receive a single type of seafood per week. We aim for variety week to week, bringing in more than 30 species of local seafood over a given year.
- See what seafood is in season on our Seafood page.
- You’ll receive an email the day before delivery that tells you all about your seafood of the week, including recipes and a fisherman bio.
- You can purchase additional seafood to add on to your Main Share delivery in our online shop, available Friday afternoon to Monday at 10am.
CAN I CHOOSE WHAT SEAFOOD I GET EACH WEEK?
- Yes! Fridays we send a newsletter listing 3-6 local sustainable seafood options for your upcoming delivery, including pre-marinated fillets, and delicacies that may cost extra. Log on to the online Shop before Monday at 10am and select the "Choose My Main Share" option to make your choice.
- If you don't make a Main Share choice online before the Monday deadline, we send you the catch of the day, but only a species that meets your preferences recorded in your ‘opt-out’ list. You’ll find out what it is the day before delivery in the email newsletter. Many customers prefer to let us choose for them each week.
CAN I MARK SEAFOOD TYPES I DON'T LIKE SO I NEVER GET THEM?
- Absolutely. You'll make your opt-out list (the seafood types you never want to receive) during the sign up process and can modify it anytime through your online account portal. We only send you seafood types that meet your preferences.
- You can log in to your customer account to change your opt-out selections at any time.
- If we accidentally send you an item from your opt-out list, we will refund you. You can also email us when your email newsletter arrives and we will swap it out if there is time before deliveries go out for the day.
CAN I ADD-ON MORE SEAFOOD TYPES TO EACH DELIVERY?
- Yes! The weekly Friday email newsletter highlights extra products we have available to purchase in addition to your Main Share. These may be fresh or frozen seafood, live crab or lobster, house-made seafood products, or other specialty items. Log on to the Members-Only Shop between Friday 3 pm and Monday 10am to purchase extra items that will be delivered with your Main Share on Wednesday or Thursday.
WHERE DOES MY FISH COME FROM?
- 95% of our seafood is harvested by small boats in California waters and we always tell you exactly who caught your fish, with what methods and where it was caught. We only source from upstanding members of the fishing community following regulations for sustainable fishing methods. Almost always we buy the fish ourselves off of the boat (or shellfish off the farm) and get to know our harvesters. We also source a few well-loved sustainable items from boats further to our north through other fish buyers because we can’t get them ourselves (e.g., Petrale Sole from Fort Bragg, Pink Shrimp and Albacore from Oregon and Sockeye Salmon from Bristol Bay, AK) using the same high standards for quality, sustainability and transparency.
WILL I GET THE SAME KIND OF FISH TWO WEEKS IN A ROW?
- This is a very rare occurrence, and usually tied to a streak of bad weather. We always aim for variety and try to avoid sending you the same item twice within 6 weeks. If you opt-out of many types of seafood, it is more likely you will get the same item twice in a short span. You have the option to select what you will get using our ‘Choose Your Main Share’ feature in our online Members Shop between Friday 3pm and Monday 10am to make sure you don’t get the same thing twice.
MY FISH CAME FROZEN, WILL IT TASTE GOOD?
- Yes! Our freezing practices are top-notch so that freshness and quality is preserved. For certain fisheries, the catch is frozen at sea to improve quality. Other times, we use frozen fish when the weather is too rough for fishing or we can’t get your preferred type of seafood fresh. We include the ‘frozen on’ date so you know it's not very old. Unlike grocery stores and processors who freeze old or low quality fish, we always freeze our fish at peak quality. If you are not happy with any of our seafood you can ask for a refund.
HOW LONG WILL MY SEAFOOD KEEP?
- To keep your seafood cold on your way, home, take a little ice out of the cooler to put in your tote bag with the fish. Please make sure to keep other seafood shares covered in ice in the cooler.
- The label on the bag will give you a recommended use-by date. Generally, our seafood will keep for 3-5 days in the refrigerator or can be stored frozen. Your weekly newsletter sent the day before delivery gives detailed instructions about how to keep the seafood fresh and when we recommend you eat it by for best experience. These dates are conservative, and it is often still tasty several days beyond the date.
WHAT IF I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH THE SEAFOOD I RECIEVE?
- We provide recipes, and preparation instructions and videos in our newsletter, on our website and in print when you pick up your seafood.
- If you are unhappy with the outcome of your seafood dish, please contact us right away and we will work with you to make up for it or suggest new recipes or techniques to try. Get Hooked is all about making sure you love your seafood, explore new recipes and expand your seafood repertoire!
